Duolin respules is a medication that is composed of Levosalbutamol Sulphate + Ipratropium Bromide and is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A patient can only take this medication with a prescription from a doctor. The composition of each 2.5 mL unit-dose vial contains the following salts and their quantity:

Levosalbutamol sulphate………………..1.25 mg

Ipratropium Bromide …………………… 500 mcg

Normal Saline Solution, IP ……………………..q.s.

Each 3 mL unit-dose vial contains:

Levosalbutamol sulphate………………..1.25 mg

Ipratropium Bromide …………………… 500 mcg

How Does Duolin Respules Work?

Duolin Respules is a combination of two medicines: Levosalbutamol and Ipratropium. Levosalbutamol is a bronchodilator while Ipratropium is an anticholinergic. They work by relaxing the muscles in the airways and widening the airways. Together, they make breathing easier.

Duolin Respules Uses 

This medication is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (a lung disorder in which the flow of air to the lungs is blocked) like breathing difficulties, wheezing, coughing, and whistling sounds during the time of breathing and also when there is tightness in the chest. 

How To Take Duolin Respules?

Children over 12 years of age and Adults are recommended to take one respule thrice daily, every 6 to 8 hours. This medication is only for oral Inhalation and should be taken only with a nebulizer. This medication is produced in two forms. It is available in unit-dose vials of 2.5 mL & 3 mL sterile solution for nebulization

Duolin Doses 

The recommended dosage can be taken by adults and children over 12 years three times a day. It can be given every 6 to 8 hours.

Duolin Respules – Side Effects

Duolin has some common side effects. These symptoms are usually mild and tend to resolve on their own. However, it is always a good idea to consult a doctor whenever there is a question in mind. Some common side effects of Duolin respules are – 

  • Headache
  • Cough, local irritation
  • Dryness of the mouth, nausea, and disturbances in gastrointestinal motility (constipation, diarrhea and vomiting)

Duolin Respules – Severe Side Effects

In some cases, this medication has some severe side effects that may require medical attention or consultation with a doctor.  Some of these side effects are  – 

  • Urticaria.
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Tachycardia.
  • Spasms of larynx
  • Exanthema

Besides this, some rare and severe side effects would require consultation with your doctor. These side effects are – 

  • Anaphylactic reactions, angioedema on the tongue, lips, and face
  • Increased intraocular pressure, pain in the eyes, mydriasis
  • Palpitations, supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation
  • Bronchospasms induced by inhalation
  • Urinary retention

Duolin Drug Interactions

It can interact with other medications and can harm the health of the patient. 

  • It may interact with asthma medications such as albuterol and epinephrine.
  • It may interact with blood thinners such as Propranolol and Labetalol.

Duolin Storage

The medication should be stored in a cool dry place and away from direct sunlight. Store it at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Do not freeze the medication. It should be kept out of the reach of children.

Do not use this medication after its expiry date. Do not take if the packaging is damaged. Don’t throw the medication down the drain. Discard it properly when no longer needed or when the medication has expired.

Duolin Respules Precautions

Duolin respules are a strong medication and should be used only with a prescription from a doctor. One of the conditions that it can result in is paradoxical bronchospasm. This condition can be life-threatening. If this condition occurs, the medication should be discontinued immediately. A doctor should be consulted immediately.

  • May not be suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  •  It should not be taken with alcohol. 
  • Avoid driving and heavy machinery.  

Do Not Overdose

Symptoms of overdose are seizures, chest pain, high/low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, headache, tremor, dry mouth, pounding heartbeat, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, sleeplessness, hypokalaemia (low potassium level in blood), fast breathing, high fever, restlessness, hallucinations, confusion. Taking the maximum recommended dose can be fatal and lead to cardiac arrest and death. 

Precautions for Cardiovascular Patients 

This medication may not be suitable for cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension and other convulsive disorders such as hyperthyroidism. Due to this medication changes in glucose levels and blood pressure levels may occur. Please discuss your cardiovascular health with your doctor.
