Moxifloxacin eye drops is an antibacterial medication that is used to treat eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and keratitis (inflammation of the cornea). This medication Moxifloxacin is a part of fluoroquinolones group of medications. This works by stopping bacterial growth.

Moxifloxacin Working 

Moxifloxacin works by interfering with bacterial DNA synthesis. It blocks the production of the enzyme needed by bacteria to replicate their DNA. This makes it effective in treating a wide range of bacterial infections.  which makes it effective in treating a variety of bacterial infections.

How To Use Moxifloxacin

Moxifloxacin is an antibacterial medication for the eye and it should be used with clean hands. The steps to use Moxifloxacin are as follows, 

1. Make sure that you have cleaned your hands thoroughly before use

2. In order to make sure that that the eye drops fall in the eye, tilt your head backwards and pull down the lower lid of your eye slightly

3. Next, hold the eyedropper above the eye and be careful not to touch the eye with the eye dropper. 

4. Gently squeeze the bottle and drop the prescribed number of eyedrops in the eye. 

5. Gently close your eyes for a few minutes. After a few minutes, open your eyes and wash your hands. 

Moxifloxacin Eye Drop Uses  

A doctor may give Moxifloxacin eye drops to a patient to treat a variety of different types of bacterial eye infections. Some of the infections that it is used to treat are as follows – 

1. It is used to treat Conjunctivitis also known as Pink Eye. It is an infection of the conjunctiva of the eye. Conjunctiva is the thin layer of tissue covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids.

2. Keratitis is an infection or inflammation which affects the cornea. Cornea is the clear outer layer of the eye.

3. It is used to treat Corneal Ulcers Infections which are open sores on the cornea.

Moxifloxacin Eye Drop Side Effects

Common side effects may include mild eye irritation, a temporary blurry vision, or a bad taste in the mouth, but serious side effects are rare.

It’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on dosage and treatment duration, and avoid wearing contact lenses while using these drops unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

Moxifloxacin Eye Drop Precautions 

Moxifloxacin is a strong antibacterial medication that may not be suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Further, if you are allergic to fluoroquinolone class of medications, this medication may not be suitable for you.  Along with this, it is suggested that – 

  • Contact lens should not be used while using moxifloxacin eye drops. 
  • Some people may experience blurry vision with the use of this medication after uing these drops. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after using  this medication. 
  • Certain other eye medications may interact with moxifloxacin eye drops. Keep your doctor informed with regards to all the medications you are taking. 
  • Avoid contaminating the dropper and use as prescribed. Overuse may lead to bacterial resistance. 

Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the correct dosage and length of treatment. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not double up on doses to make up for missed ones.

Moxiflatoxin Doses 

A doctor may give the doses of the medication based on the severity of the infection and the type of infection. However, there are some generic guidelines with regards to recommended dose according to infection. These guidelines are as follows: 

1. For Pink Eye or Conjunctivitis: 

In the initial stages of the treatment i.e for the first two days a doctor may tell the patient to apply 1 drop in the affected eye every two hours during the day. The medication can be applied upto 8 times a day for every two hours. 

After the first two days the doctor may reduce the frequency of the drops to 1-2 times per day for 7 days. 

2. For Keratitis or corneal ulcers the dosage during the first two days is one drop every 30 minutes during the day. After the first two days the frequency can decrease to one drop every one to four hours for the remainder of the treatment duration. 

Few things to keep in mind while using this medication are as follows – 

  • Follow the dosage and the duration of the treatment as prescribed by your doctor 
  • Shake the bottle well before use 

Contact your healthcare provider in case the symptoms don’t improve within a few days or if they worsen. 

Moxifloxacin Eye Drops Storage Guidelines 

To maintain the effectiveness of these eye drops, they should be stored in the following manner. 

They should be stored at a temperature of 20-25 degree celsius. Avoid storing them in the freezer or excessively hot places. 

They should be stored in a dry place away from humidity. 

They should be stored away from direct sunlight as they can degrade due to UV light. 

It is best to store the medication in its original packaging.

Its should be kept away from children and pets 

Moxifloxacin Disposal 

These eye drops should be disposed of in a safe manner. These tablets should not be flushed down the toilet and local guidelines with regards to the disposal of the medication should be followed.
