Dark Circle Removal: Home Remedies, Causes, Treatment

Dark Circle can be caused by a number of factors. It can be due to lack of sleep, dehydration, genetics as well as stress. While home remedies such as cold compress can provide temporary relief, it is recommended to bring about lifestyle changes.

What Are Dark Circles?

Dark Circle simply means the darkening of the skin under the eyes. Depending upon the natural skin colour, dark circles may appear in the shades of blue, purple, brown or black. Dark circles are not a medical condition and they may make you look older or tired than you are. They are typically not an aspect of concern. Further, the skin under the eyes tends to be thin and sensitive for many people. This thin and sensitive area around the eyes often tends to be darker than the rest of the face and give the appearance of dark circles. However, there are ways to temporarily remove or reduce them for cosmetic reasons.

Dark Circles Removal

Dark circles, while in many cases can’t be removed permanently, can be reduced by a variety of methods such as cold compresses, DIY masks that help hydrate and soothe the areas under the eyes. Following is a list of things that one can do in order to reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Cold Compress For Dark Circles

Stress and dehydration can not just result in dark circle but puffy eyes as well. Cold compress can help reduce this puffiness. A cold compress can provide relief by increasing blood circulation in the under eye area. An ice bag or chilled tea bags can be placed on the eyes for 10 minutes and can provide relief.

Potato juice helps hydrate the skin as well as help reduce pigmentation. This juice can further be combined with olive oil to enhance its effects.

Aloe Vera Gel

Gently massage aloe vera gel in the under eye area for a few minutes to hydrate the skin and reduce puffiness. It should be used 3-4 times a week consistently for best results.

Almond Oil With Vitamin E For Dark Circles

This can easily be a part of the night time routine. Before sleeping, wash your face, mix a few drops of almond oil with vitamin E and gently massage it. This can be washed off in the morning.

Chilled Rose Water For Dark Circle

Chilled rose water can be used to soothe the area under the eyes as well. Soak cotton pads in chilled rose water and then place them on your eyes for 10-15 minutes to refresh and brighten the areas around the eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.

Besides this, some simple DIY or do it yourself eye masks can be made at home to effectively reduce dark circles.  Following are some recipes that can be made with things available at home.

Recipes For Homemade Eye Masks

Some of the eye masks that can be easily made at home are cucumber and aloe vera eye masks and turmeric and yogourt eye masks. The recipes for the eye masks are as follows.

Cucumber and Aloe Vera Eye Mask

The ingredients needed for the eye mask are –

  • 1 tablespoon cucumber juice (cooling & brightening)
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel (hydrating & soothing)
  • 1 teaspoon potato juice (lightens pigmentation)
  • 2 cotton pads

Applying and  removing the masks is a simple six step process.

  1. The first step is to grate a small piece of cucumber and  potato.
  2. The next step is to squeeze out the juice from the pulp.
  3. The next step is to mix the juices extracted with aloe vera gel in a small post bowl.
  4. Next soak cotton pads in the mixture and then place the cotton pads on the eyes for 15 to 20 minutes with cool water.
  5. Rinse it afterwards.
  6. Apply light moisturizer or almond oil after rinsing.

For best results, apply this mask 2-3 times a week.

Turmeric and Yogurt Brightening Eye Mask

This simple eye mask can be made by combining the ingredients easily available in your kitchen. The ingredients and their quantities are as follows –

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder (anti-inflammatory & brightening)
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt (moisturizing & exfoliating)
  • ½ teaspoon honey (hydrating & soothing)

Simply mix these ingredients in the bowl to get a smooth paste and apply a thin layer under the eyes and avoid getting it into your eyes. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, rinse off with lukewarm water and dry your face gently. Apply light moisturizer or oil.

This combination is useful because it uses the combined benefits of honey, turmeric and yogurt. Turmeric reduces pigmentation and inflammation, yogurt exfoliates and brightens and honey soothes and hydrates. This mask should be applied 2-3 times a week for best results.
