Cefixime is an antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class. This class of drugs is used to treat various types of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial cell walls. The lack of cell walls eventually leads to the death of the bacteria.

Doctors give Cefixime tablets to patients to help treat various diseases such as  –

• Gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease)
• Urinary tract infections caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis
• A wide range of year and throat infections such as
  • Tonsillitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Bronchitis (infection of the airway tubes leading to the lungs)

Cefixime Tablet Working 

This chemical compound first binds to the bacteria’s penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). These proteins are the final steps to creating and strengthening the cell wall. As Cefixime disrupts the formation of the bacteria’s cell wall, the bacteria loses its structural integrity and eventually dies. 

This mechanism of Cefixime is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. this medication works well against diseases such as:

• Streptococcus pneumoniae  
• Haemophilus Influenzae 
• Neisseria gonorrhoeae  
• Escherichia coli  
• Proteus mirabilis  

Cefixime Forms and Dosage 

This medication is available in various forms such as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, and oral suspension or liquid. 

The medication’s dosage depends on the severity of the infection, the patient’s age, and kidney function. Typically, it can be taken once or twice daily. The chewable tablets should be chewed properly before swallowing, and the suspension should be taken in a measured dose.

– Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

Cefixime Tablet Precautions

Before taking cefixime, inform your healthcare provider if you have:

– A history of allergic reactions to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins

– Kidney disease

– A history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis

Interactions 

Cefixime can interact with certain medications, such as Aspirin and aspirin-like medications. It can also interact with blood thinners and Carbamazepine. Discuss all your medications with your healthcare provider. 

Cefixime Storage

Store cefixime at room temperature in a cool dry place. The oral suspension may be kept in the refrigerator. However, after 14 days the amused medications should be discarded. The capsule and tablets should be stored at room temperature between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The Oral suspension can be stored between 2 and 25 degrees Celsius.
